Okay, here’s a short one at the end of a long week (for me…it’s amazing how the theory of two kids pales so dramatically to the reality of two kids).
We’ve all heard the scuttlebutt about Matthew McConaughey wanting to name his kid Budweiser (and that his brother did name his kid Miller Lyte…nice). That’s its own topic and certainly lends some support to Michael’s theory about bad baby names being the fault of the men. Anyway, I did a check on Ancestry.com and was disappointed by both Budweiser and Miller Lyte. I did, however, find a Bud Weiser:
This guy must have been in a circus or something. He shows up in Ohio in 1910 as a lodger and lists “Singer” as his profession. Everyone around him are singers, acrobats, comedians, and the like. It’s an interesting list. (One of them is named “Fread Great.” In the context, I wonder if it was supposed to be “Fread the Great.” We’ll never know).
There was also a girl named Miller Light in the 1910 census, at least according to the index, but the image is distorted and so I’m not going to open myself up to the experts on that one.
Oh, and incidentally, my co-author Michael Sherrod is going to appear on The Today Show on Monday to talk about the book, so check it out.

I wasn’t sure where to write this. My name is Ursula, and I was named this because my mother loved the name. My middle name is Gwynne, so i think in some unconscious way my mother named me after the author Ursula K. Le Guin… but that’s not my problem name wise. I was born 2 years before the Little Mermaid came out, So when i was in preschool i never heard the end of “you were named after the Sea witch!”I know it doesn’t seem like a bad name, but it is always the name of the evil characters, except for in “Super Troopers”. So yea, random. I also went to grammar school and high school with twins named Ronald and Donald.
growing up I got plenty of jokes about being a dishsoap and taking grease out of the way. so when I had my children i always tried to be careful of naming them. So my older 2 kids have simple names, and middle names of Michael and Michelle. Later I got married and we had a third child…I wanted to pass on this Michael or Michelle in some way to my third child….and chose my grandmothers maiden name Michalow (yes it sounds like the beer). So now when people hear my youngest daughters name they think we are pot-headed booze hounds!! Michalow Roach…this did not hit me until after she was born.
