Another Bad Baby Name Avoided!

Two days ago, my wife (who rocks, by the way) gave birth to our second son:

Baby Eli

 What did we name him?

Dungeon Dragon Gygax of course.

Just kidding. Actually, his name’s Eli. Man, wouldn’t it rock to have a kid named Dungeon Dragon? According to my co-author, Michael Sherrod, men often want to name their kids funny things, which is why I say that and my awesome wife rolls her eyes. (Michael’s example is giving your kid the middle name “danger.” No really, check out the article about us in the New York Times, if you haven’t already. I just saw it today because, well, my wife was having a baby.)

Incidentally, there is no one in the U.S. federal census named Dungeon and only a smattering of Dragons. Too bad, I guess.

Dungeon Dragon its a great name, but I don’t think my wife will let me name our baby like that.

You just had a baby, and you’re managing to blog and give interviews? I’m impressed.

Oh, wait — you’re not sleeping, so you have plenty of time.

    Congratulations!

I’m new here - but the title of the article/book just grabbed me. Over the last 25-30 years, my mother and I have encountered many unique, interesting, sometimes profound - but always attention getting names - thru our work.

I’d love to share some with you - but am not certain about publicly posting the names of people who are most likely still alive……

Email when you have a burping break (ain’t it grand??? Really!!) if so inclined.

By the way, my vet’s last name is Dragon………….

    Congrats,

Congratulations on the new family member. Cute kid.

If you like strange names check out the blog http://mostlycajun.com Every sunday he has a posting about all the really strange names that show up in the newspaper for the newborn babies in town. Apparently there are some really sick twisted people having babies in Lafeyette LA.

My friend wants to name his future child Mayonnaise, and to call her Mayo for short. I think he got it from the cartoon Doug (Patty Mayonnaise is one of the characters) when he was younger. Boys…

Anyway, congratulations, and thanks for not naming your kid Dungeon Dragon Gygax.

Your son is adorable and I love the name Eli. Care to lend a hand in helping my husband (who wants to name our future son “Oscar”) and I pick a name for our soon to be adopted baby girl? Last name is Horn. We’re considering Carly, Claudia, Chloe, Olivia, Rebecca and Annabella, but would consider other suggestions.
btw: There is a dentist in my neighborhood with the last name: Dockter. (Dr. Dockter)

I have a cousin who named his son, Miles Danger Leach. The little tyke is nearly two years old. Since he has to live with Leach for a last name, I think it’s great that he’ll be able to say, “Danger is my middle name!”

Congratulations on sweet baby Eli. And, congrats on your new book. What an interesting topic! Back in the early 1970’s, my cousin’s wife taught elementary school. Every year at the beginning of the school year, she would write down all the funny/weird names of children coming to school, and then share them with us. What always struck me as particularly odd were the parents who kept naming their children after STD’s (sexually transmitted diseases)! The two worst girl names were: Chlamydia and Gonorrhea … !!! I mean, really??? I am surprised they were allowed to leave the hospital with those names on their child’s birth certificate. We had a good laugh each year when she would show us that list, but we also felt so sorry for those girls. I am ordering your new book on Amazon.com … but do you have a section in your book on this type of baby-naming? It would be interesting to see how many of these unfortunate children changed their names. Happy Easter!

Maybe baby names are why us wives are the ones who fill out the birth certificate. Then you husbands aren’t able to name our children something they will forever regret.
